Understand the early signs of labor
The early signs of labor can be subtle, confusing, and very different from what movies and books portray. As your body prepares for birth, you may notice changes that leave you wondering whether labor is truly beginning or still days away.
The truth is that early labor often begins gradually, and the signs are different for every woman. Learning what to look for can help you feel more prepared and less anxious.

Common Early Signs of Labor Many Moms Miss
Increased Pressure in the Pelvis
You may feel heaviness or pressure as your baby moves lower into the birth canal. This is a normal sign that the body is preparing.
Regular and Growing Contractions
Unlike Braxton Hicks, true contractions become more consistent and gradually stronger. They may start far apart and slowly move closer together.
Lower Back Aching
Some mothers experience a dull ache across the lower back that comes and goes. This can be an early sign of labor beginning.
A Change in Energy
Many women feel unusually tired or, surprisingly, full of energy in the hours or days before labor begins. Both are normal.
Loss of the Mucus Plug
This may appear as thick discharge and is another natural sign that the body is preparing for birth.
Every mother’s experience is unique. Trust your instincts, stay in communication with your care provider, and prepare your environment to stay calm and supported as labor approaches.
